Description

Fashions in architecture changed from formal to informal just before the Civil War, and the transition, although often abrupt, could also be gentle. A Greek Revival cottage, for example, might be embellished with detailing from the newer Italianate style. Sometimes described by the French term cottage orn (ornate cottage), these houses are common in Vicksburg, Mississippi. 

Our version features lacy latticework wrapping the foundation, decorative brackets trimming the dormers, and six pierced columns supporting the porch roof. The plan offers a blend of traditional and contemporary styling. High ceilings - 10 feet on the first floor and 9 feet on the second floor - add to the feeling of relaxed formality.
