DESCRIPTION
Away from the larger towns of the Tidewater, housing styles were often simpler. Understatement was the basis for their appeal, as it is with our Chesapeake Country House. Special emphasis is given to the entry, with a wide, graceful fanlight covering the doorway. Carriage lamps and sidelights flank the double doors, and just above the entry a circular vent accents a small gable.
Inside, an expansive hallway runs the depth of the house. At its end, a fanlit doorway, with detailing identical to the entry, opens to the rear terrace. A combination living room/library includes a traditional fireplace as well as floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. French doors bordered by windows open the room to the rear terrace. A large, open-plan kitchen includes a generous pantry and storage area and an adjoining skylit breakfast room. A separate work area provides space for cookbook storage and recipe reading. The dining room is formal with a tray ceiling and traditional moldings.
Bedrooms are placed in a separate wing. French doors and a vaulted ceiling open the master bedroom. Two additional bedrooms share a walk-through bath. The laundry is in a practical location in the hallway between bedrooms and a breakfast room. The one-story plan contains 3 bedrooms and 21/2 baths in about 2,500 square feet of heated space.
