DESCRIPTION
Precise proportioning and thoughtful detailing can make a small house special and distinctive. That's the case with our traditional stucco cottage, designed by Frank McCall, Jr., of Moultrie, Georgia. An appealing blend of formal and farmhouse characteristics, the plan achieves the simple elegance that's usually associated with much larger homes.
The careful detailing starts outside. Stucco with wood trim gives a soft, finished look to the walls. A chimney of stuccoed brick with a graceful arched cap tops a gabled roof. A columned portico with shed roof focuses attention on the entry. Beneath this portico, a smaller porch, recessed, raised, and dressed with a formal balustrade, allows guests to enter from either side.
A small hallway separates the master bedroom and bath from the living room, enabling the bath to double as a guest powder room easily accessible from the living room. The right half of the plan contains a dining room and an old-fashioned kitchen. Between kitchen and garden lies a utility area, which combines the functions of laundry and pantry. Compact overall dimensions of about 40 x 42 feet suit the house for a smaller lot. The plan has more than 2,000 square feet of heated space.
