DESCRIPTION
A two-bedroom house offering the comfort and special features of a larger, custom home is hard to find, even though the two-bedroom market is growing steadily. Designed especially to meet that need, this house contains enough style, livability, and flexibility for either primary or vacation use. The plan merges indoor and outdoor living areas, offering about 2,700 square feet of living space, with more than 1,600 square feet indoors and close to 1,100 square feet in deck and courtyard.
Window walls, skylights, and clerestory produce a bright, spacious effect and open the rear of the house to views of garden and sky. The basically closed front elevation offers additional buffering from the street's sights and sounds with a brick-walled parking court. Simple but well detailed, the house consists of beaded-wood clapboard with brick trim. An arched Palladian fanlight at the rear and quarter-round half-fan windows flanking the chimney add appealing traditional touches to a contemporary design.
Because outdoor living plays such an important role in the plan, the house adapts well to resort areas of the South. A large, private courtyard to the front of the house serves as a preliminary entry. A brick, openwork, screen wall provides visual separation from the carport and carries across the back of the house to form an extension of the living room. An outdoor storage room tucks neatly into a corner of the courtyard.
