Description
The garden district architecture of the South is well named. The houses found in these older, tree-lined sections of town invite the creation of gardens to set off the galleries, verandas, and terraces that are so much a part of their look. This garden district house was designed to carry on the tradition of house and garden interaction.
But the house also includes some important departures from tradition that will make it practical for today's families. For example, it combines distinctive design with a relatively compact size. Multiple galleries, a hipped roof, and the careful use of stucco and lattice give the house its classic good looks. The two-story center section is set between wings. Beyond the traditional exterior is an open, contemporary floor plan, creating a mood of relaxed formality. A double-height foyer steps down into a large living room. To the right of the foyer, a separate dining room overlooks the front gallery. Triple French doors in the living room lead to a columned veranda, which opens to a semi-enclosed rear garden.
