Description
The coastal architecture of the South has character all its own, as this beach house clearly shows. It combines rambling, turn-of-the-century good looks with some special features that ensure comfort and energy efficiency.
The Coastal Cottage house plan achieves a vernacular look, in part, by the veranda that encircles the main floor much like a ship's deck. It offers panoramic views and could be screened, if desired. A skirting of latticework and a wooden balustrade provide old-fashioned carpenter detailing. Proper siting helps direct sea breezes inside, while the deep veranda cools the air before it enters the house. To take advantage of this natural cooling system, the long axis of the house should be sited parallel to the beach.
The floor plan offers a one-room-deep design throughout much of the house, allowing for cross-ventilation. Half the square footage is for living and relaxing areas. Open planning and an absence of dividing walls underline the house's informality.
